Why do people call the Montreal Canadiens the habs?

It is short for "Les Habitants" (literally "the (first French) Settlers of Québec"). This is what many people think the "H" in the Canadiens logo stands for. HOWEVER, this is wrong! The team's official name is "Club de Hockey Canadien", the team will tell potential naysayers that the H stands for Hockey. Despite what the team wants people to think, "Habs" isn't going away that easily (100+ years and counting).
