Highly unlikely the Red Wings would save a large unit like that, unfortunately. Today's units tend to ironically weigh less than their older counterparts, not to mention people in Detroit have been screaming for a much larger screen for over 20 years now.
In a perfect world, they'd collaberate with OES to have something that Chicago currently has, keeping the "old school" scoring digits, while combining it with the current fancy 4k TV trend that's going on.

Actually the very first scoreboard at Joe Louis Arena used from 1979-1991 was moved next door at Cobo Arena when it was replaced by the current scoreboard. I think it was used from 1991-2010 and then removed when they started renovations.

This is a pic of Cobo's scoreboard from I think '74 when the Stags played there: When they built Joe Louis they bought another of the same kind. Then the one in Joe Louis was replaced with the bigger White Way board. Or, when the Joe was ready they took the board over there, then moved it back to Cobo later. not 100% sure.

JLA and Cobo's units look identical, which brings us to our next question: Was Cobo's transferred to JLA in 1979? (This idea of old units being used for a brand-spanking new arena is not new, NYI had this occur in 1972) A screencap just for fun:

welp, both Joe Louis and Cobo were owned by the City of Detroit, and given the Joe's many shortcomings when it was built, nothing would surprise me.

Ha...knowing the city, anything would of been possible. A good place to start, if you were willing to jump into the rabbit hole, would of been city minutes if they even allowed access to such documents that far back and if it was ever up for consideration despite how damn expensive these units cost.

Have to be a heck of a big lobby; the scoreboard is 20 feet tall. They'll probably just sell it.

They will probably save the HD screens and leave the rest to get buried in the pile of rubble.

This might confirm that the old Cobo Arena scoreboard was brought over to the Joe. Note the name on the board

thank you, that answers everything. Where'd that photo come from? Never turned up in a google search. this is what Cobo had when the Pistons played there in the late '60s: One of the screens (the one facing the north side of the building) was starting to flake out, with areas of pixels not working.

this is what Cobo had when the Pistons played there in the late '60s: This looks like a product from the company that built Pittsburgh Civic Arena's first scoreboard
